What You Can Do to Reduce Allergens in Your Home

What You Can Do to Reduce Allergens in Your Home

The air that you breathe in your home can impact your health, especially during cold and flu season. When you are breathing dirty and impure air, it increases the chance that you will get sick. Here are three ways that you can purify the air that goes into your lungs and keep you and your family healthier.

Change the Air Filters

When the air filters in your HVAC system are clogged and dirty, unhealthy air is being circulated throughout your home. In addition, the efficiency of your HVAC system is impacted, causing your system to struggle to heat your home. You do not want to recirculate air that contains allergens. Many people overlook changing their air filter and end up paying the price through illness. Your air filter should be changed every 90 days in order to keep the air clean.

Add Area Rugs

Both carpet and hard floors allow allergens to spread and go airborne. Adding an area rug absorbs allergens and keeps them from spreading rapidly. Certain rugs can even act as a filter, taking allergens out of the air and trapping them in the rug. Make sure that you check the material of the area rugs that you intend to buy to make sure that they are hypoallergenic. Some materials of rugs are better than others to make your home safer from allergies. For example, a polypropylene area rug can help repel allergens and keep mold from growing while a shag rug may be conducive for allergens.

Use a Humidifier

Allergens and other impurities thrive and circulate more freely when the air in your home is dry. In these conditions, they can remain airborne and even travel through the air. However, studies have shown that when you raise the humidity levels in your home, germs do not thrive and can even be killed off. In addition, humid air can help people who suffer from allergies by making it easier for them to breathe. The humidity will be therapeutic for nasal passages and can help them expel irritants faster. Using a humidifier can keep you from suffering the harms that are associated with hot and dry air.

You can take steps to protect yourself from allergens that can affect you inside your home. As you see above, some of these steps are as simply as buying a rug or a humidifier and can provide greater comfort and health in your life.
