Types of Vegetables You Should Be Getting in Your Diet

Eating a balanced diet is the best way to fuel your body to keep in tip-top shape. And an area of diet that most of us are lacking in is eating enough vegetables. But vegetables are essential, particularly for children, whose growing bodies need the nutrients and minerals that veggies provide. And not all veggies are the same, different types of veggies come with different benefits, so eating a wider variety of types of vegetables is just as important as eating enough veggies. Here are a few types of veggies that you should be getting in your diet.

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables are the kind of veggies that grow underground. There are tons of very common root vegetables that you are most likely already very familiar with: carrots, potatoes, and onions are a few of the most common. Root vegetables tend to be very high in fiber, which is essential to promoting gut health and regularity. Root veggies also contain lots of vitamin C, which helps support eye health, and boosts our immune system. If you aren’t including root vegetables in your diet or the diet of your children, then you should consider including sweet potatoes, garlic, onions, and carrots in your weekly meal plans.

Leafy Greens

The leafy greens may be the most famous and most talked about category of vegetables out there. Leafy greens are great because they are notoriously low in calories, so you can eat a lot of them without consuming very many calories. Leafy greens also can decrease your risk for developing diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and even reduce the risk of dementia and other mental regression in later life. Not to mention that leafy greens help counteract acid because they’re naturally alkaline. Adding salads to your dinners is a great way to increase your leafy green intake, and make sure to include things like kale, spinach, and arugula.

Cruciferous Vegetables

This one may sound scary, but cruciferous vegetables are actually a very common type of vegetable that you probably already see in your day to day life. Cruciferous veggies are things like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts – they’re called cruciferous because of the cross shaped blossoms. Cruciferous veggies are great low calorie veggies that are high in vitamin C, E, K and fiber. Cruciferous veggies also contain nutrients that can decrease inflammation and even may help to reduce cancer risk in people who eat them. Find a way to add cruciferous vegetables to your diet to reap the benefits

Vegetables are delicious – if you know how to prepare them right. And there are such a wide variety of vegetables out there that you can certainly find some veggies that anyone will love. Eating a diverse array of veggies is important to getting all of the nutrients your body needs. If you can make sure to include these three categories of veggies in your diet, then you can rest assured that you are getting the benefits of a high veggie diet.
